I would like to share my experience of home buying using Realtor Vickie Given of Berkshire Hathaway Home Services. I decided to relocate from Ohio to Greenville, South Carolina, one year before I actually made the move. I started searching real estate on the internet. I thought I could learn the market by viewing properties on line. I became completely discouraged and thought I could afford nothing. The prices were so different from where I lived in Ohio. Then I contacted Realtor Vickie Given and my hope was renewed!Vickie and I became fast friends because she is extremely knowledgeable and compassionate. She would email me listings and I would say "yes check it out" or "no." She quickly became familiar with my architecture style, my "must haves," my dislikes and the fact I wanted to feel totally secure -- not knowing the area well.I actually put in an offer on a condominium on Vickie's recommendation because she was positive it was the home for me and my daughters. Jane was terrific! I contacted her late Friday night, my apologies again, after seeing a listing had been posted for just one hour when we were out of town. Jane went to the home early on Saturday and took a video and provided her professional expertise re sq ft pricing in the area. Regarding the actual sales process, it was handled in a very professional way and while I did not receive the original anticipated price the final result was satisfactory and the closing was handled without my presence effectively.
My only suggestion regarding the sales process was the frequent lack of communication between myself and the showing agent. The automated technique that is being used apparently by the realtor community is not efficient or at times effective. I suggest this one aspect of the selling owner and showing agent relationship be studied and modified to provide better communication between the two parties. Regina is a very warm and welcoming person but is also an aggressive realtor, which is exactly what you want in this kind of market. She wasted no time finding information for us and worked non-stop through the weekends to get us the right house. There was never a second I felt like she wasn't on top of things. When looking at houses we came across one that was good deal financially but not what we were looking for. We were purchasing a house in a market very far from our current home, and she was very effective at supporting us in this effort (working with our schedule, helping us evaluate houses that we were not easily able to go see physically, helping to line up other resources we needed (e.g., inspectors, septic experts, etc.)). Where she really shined was at helping us close the deal when we finally saw the right house for us. Since the market is so dynamic and moving so fast, many realtors do not have good insight into what a house is really worth right now, but Debbie was right on target with this and helped us move aggressively to get the house we wanted without over-bidding (and without losing to someone else willing to overbid). We had been looking to move to the Greenville area and saw a house that was in a neighborhood that we thought we wanted to live in so we contacted the listing agent, Regina. We had not yet begun working with a local agent as we were still 6 months from making a decision. Regina listened carefully to our wish list and over the next couple of months showed us areas and houses to look at and helped us distill down what we were really looking for.
